Majiacun Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous, K2m , (33c)

Province:
Henan

Type Locality and Naming

Xichuan basin. The Majiacun Formation was erected in the report on the red beds of the Zhechuan basin of Henan (unpublished) in 1975. The section for the designation is at the Majia Village of Heidouya-Dongxisi of the Zhechuan County (?Xichuan Co?) of Henan. The Majiacun Formation was officially quoted in the Geological Annals of Henan in 1989.

Lithology and Thickness

The Majiacun Formation is represented by brown red calcareous siltstone and fine sandstone with sandy conglomerate and mudstone. It possesses amber and gypsum. It is 390.22 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation marked by grayish white sandy conglomerate is distinguished from the Gaogou Fm of brownish red and grayish green siltstone. It is a conformable contact.

Upper contact

The top is bounded by the appearance of grayish white conglomerate at the base of the Sigou Fm. It is a conformable contact.

Regional extent

The formation occurs in the form of NW-oriented bands in Zoumagang of Xixia, Yangcheng, Dashiqiao of Zhechuan, Xiaguan of Neixiang and Liuquanpu of Zhenping of west Henan. It varies considerably in thickness and decreases gradually in thickness towards west.

Fossils

The formation yields Ornothopoda Omithopoces; vertebra Oraithopops; Dinosaurian eggs Spheroolithus taoheensis, Ovalloolithus cf. chihanghouensis; Charophytes Porochara anluensis, P. soheria, Obtusochara luxiensis; Sporopollen grains Schizaea sp., Lygodium sp., Proteaceae sp., Tricolporopollenites sp.

Age

In a three-epoch division of Cretaceous, Hao Yichun et al. (2000) assigned it to late Cretaceous (K3). In the two-epoch division of Cretaceous, the present lexicon conforms the formation as Late Cretaceous in age. [For graphics, arbitrarily put in Santonian in this succession.]
